Folk Concert: Ray Cooper

Ray is a story-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. During his 24 years with Oysterband, they made 19 albums, toured around the world and won three awards from the BBC Folk programme. His frst solo album, Tales of Love War and Death by Hanging came in 2010 and was recorded in his own log cabin studio at home in Sweden.

In 2013 Ray left to pursue a solo career and has since released another 3 albums: Palace Of Tears in 2014; Between The Golden Age And The Promised Land in 2018 and Land Of Heroes in 2021. He is currently working on the 5th solo album and will debut some of his new songs on his April tour.

Now with over 40 solo tours completed, Ray has played in Canada, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Holland, Finland and the UK, where he toured twice in 2022 and included appearances at the Ely and Shrewsbury Folk Festivals and at Rhythm Tree Festival on the Isle of Wight.

Many of Ray’s songs tell stories and he accompanies himself on various instruments: guitar for Whistleblower, mandolin for The Unknown Soldier Has A Name, cello for Land Of Heroes or piano for Love And Vengeance.
